Why a tank that looks fine at startup can fail in 3–5 years — and the one resin-selection decision that determines which outcome you get.
"FRP" (fiberglass-reinforced plastic) describes a construction method, not a chemical resistance rating. The resin used inside that construction is what actually determines whether a tank survives sodium hypochlorite service. Isophthalic polyester resin is lower-cost and performs fine in many mild chemical services, but it degrades faster under sustained oxidizer exposure. Vinyl ester resin has meaningfully better resistance to oxidizers like NaOCl and higher temperature tolerance, which is why it's the standard resin for hypochlorite storage tanks in the water/wastewater and chemical processing world. Two tanks can both be quoted as "FRP" while one is built with a resin that will not hold up to the chemical inside it.
The structural fiberglass shell of an FRP tank is not what touches the stored chemical — the interior liner is. A properly built NaOCl tank has a resin-rich interior liner, typically a C-veil surface layer with a higher resin-to-glass ratio than the structural laminate behind it, engineered specifically as the corrosion barrier. A vendor can build the exact same structural shell with a thin, generic liner instead of a proper resin-rich corrosion barrier, and the tank will still be sold and labeled as "FRP." The liner spec — resin type, veil layer thickness, and cure — is what belongs on the purchase order, not just the shell material name.
Resin degradation from oxidizer exposure is a slow chemical attack on the polymer matrix — not a sudden structural failure. Micro-cracking and resin breakdown accumulate underneath a surface that can still look completely fine for years, especially without internal inspection. By the time visible symptoms show up — weeping, blistering, discoloration, wall thinning — the liner has usually already lost a real fraction of its design life. This is the mechanism behind tanks rated for 15-20 years of service failing at the 3-5 year mark: not a manufacturing defect, but an undersized resin spec that was never caught before the PO went out.
