Why the Catalog GPD Number Isn't the Spec

A membrane element's rated production — AXEON's HF5-2540 lists 850 GPD at 80 psi, for example — is a nominal figure measured under the manufacturer's fixed test conditions. Change the feed temperature, TDS, recovery target, or fouling state and actual permeate production moves with it. Sizing a system by multiplying the catalog number by element count, without correcting for the site's real worst-case water, is one of the more common ways an RO system technically meets the datasheet and still misses production in the field.

The membrane's chlorine tolerance matters just as much as its flow rating. Polyamide thin-film membranes are oxidizer-sensitive — most publish a 0 ppm continuous chlorine/chloramine tolerance — so the dechlorination stage ahead of the membrane isn't optional pretreatment, it's the difference between a membrane that lasts years and one that fails from oxidation damage inside its first season. And the pressure vessel the element sits in has its own rating: a membrane rated to 400 psi installed in a housing rated to 300 psi is still a 300 psi system — the lower-rated component always governs, valves and fittings included.
