Real Specifications
| Chrome reduction pH control range | pH lowered to ~2.5 (optimum range 2.0-2.5); reaction rate slows significantly by pH 3.0, very slow by pH 4.0 | gf-signet-application-solutions.md |
| Chrome reduction ORP setpoint | -300mV (-400mV max) generally adequate at pH 2.0 | gf-signet-application-solutions.md |
| Chrome reduction minimum detention time | 15 minutes, required for most chrome reduction processes | gf-signet-application-solutions.md |
| Cyanide destruction stage 1 setpoints | pH raised to 11.5 using sodium hydroxide, then chlorine added until ORP reaches +450mV | gf-signet-application-solutions.md |
Lowering chrome-reduction pH further than needed risks releasing hazardous sulfur dioxide gas into the atmosphere — a real, explicit safety hazard the vendor calls out, and during cyanide destruction the acid injection must be manually locked out below pH 11 or the process won't oxidize cyanide to cyanate properly, with cyanogen chloride gas release as the named risk if pH drops too far too fast.
An actuated valve dosing acid or caustic into a plating chrome-reduction or cyanide-destruction tank isn't a generic flow-control component — it's operating inside a 0.5 pH-unit window (2.0-2.5) where drifting the wrong direction either stalls the reaction or releases SO2 gas, which is why James specs the valve and the control loop together, not the valve alone.
