VKC/MSVKC's airtight column is a direct response to a real plating-sump failure mode — corrosive vapor off-gassing from an open sump otherwise migrates up the column and attacks the shaft and motor; the single-impeller (no back impeller) design also prevents aeration/microbubbles in the pumped stream.
A plating sump pump has to survive both the liquid and the vapor above it — VKC/MSVKC's airtight column exists because corrosive off-gas migrating up an open column is a slower, quieter failure mode than a leak, and just as expensive to fix.
