Graco QUANTM Electric Diaphragm Pumps: What They Are, What They Save, Where They Fit

Direct answer: Graco QUANTM pumps are electric-operated double diaphragm (EODD) pumps: a motor drives the diaphragms instead of compressed air, so you skip the compressor losses the U.S. DOE puts at 85–90% of input energy. The flagship QUANTM i230 is a 3-inch aluminum pump rated 230 gpm and 100 psi on 380–480 V three-phase power. It still stalls under pressure and runs dry like an air pump, but it is for non-hazardous areas only.

"QUANTM is simply the best double diaphragm pump on the market — air-operated or electric. Nothing else delivers this combination of energy savings, safe stall under pressure, long-term reliability, and quiet operation." — James Riggins

Why an electric diaphragm pump at all

An air-operated double diaphragm (AODD) pump is cheap to buy and forgiving to run. The cost hides upstream. Your compressor turns electricity into heat and pressure, the air loses more in dryers, leaks and regulators, and the pump exhausts what is left to atmosphere. The DOE compressed-air sourcebook estimates only 10–15% of the compressor's electrical input becomes useful work, and that one horsepower of air motor takes 7–8 hp of electricity to supply.

An electric diaphragm pump keeps the diaphragm pumping action (gentle on solids, dead-head safe, dry-run tolerant) and feeds it electricity directly. The saving is real, but its size depends on your flow, discharge pressure, hours and power rate. Don't buy on a headline percentage. Run your own duty through the compressed air cost calculator.

The flagship: QUANTM i230 at a glance

The i230 is the largest QUANTM pump and the one most likely to replace a 3-inch air pump. All figures below are from Graco's sales sheet 3J0984EN-A and manual X063399. The full QUANTM i230 page has the complete spec table, pressure/flow curve, materials chart and install checklist.

Where QUANTM fits, and where it doesn't

Paints & coatings

Batch transfer and tank-to-tank moves where an air pump is running most of the shift.

Water & wastewater

Sludge, polymer and general plant transfer on a 480 V three-phase supply.

Ceramics & building materials

Slip, slurry and filled products within the aluminum fluid section and 3/8 in solids rating.

General transfer

Any long-running aluminum-compatible transfer duty where compressed air is the biggest line on the energy bill.

Pick something else when: the area is hazardous/classified, the fluid attacks aluminum, you only have 120/240 V single-phase power, or the pump runs a few minutes a day (the energy saving won't cover the higher purchase price). A pump rated for the area, or a non-metallic AODD for chemistry aluminum can't take, is the right tool there.

Receiving, installing and servicing an i230

At 388 lb the i230 arrives crated on a pallet and comes off with a crane or forklift, not by hand. Check the crate and nameplate against the order before signing for it, set it on a level pad that matches the 12.5 × 20.2 in mounting pattern, and keep inlet pressure at or below 25% of outlet pressure. Graco backs it with a 12-month warranty; LibertyCES helps with startup and spares.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Graco QUANTM pump?

QUANTM is Graco's line of electric-operated double diaphragm (EODD) pumps. An electric motor and mechanical drive move the diaphragms instead of compressed air. The largest model, the QUANTM i230, is a 3-inch aluminum pump rated 230 gpm free flow and 100 psi, introduced in 2026.

How much energy does an electric diaphragm pump save versus an air-operated one?

It depends on flow, pressure and hours, so calculate it rather than trusting a headline percentage. The U.S. Department of Energy puts compressed air at roughly 10–15% overall efficiency, and Graco uses about 20.7 kW of compressor power per 100 SCFM. Our free calculator works out the air pump's kW, the electric pump's kW and the annual cost difference for your duty.

Can the QUANTM i230 stall against a closed valve or run dry?

Yes. Graco's i230 sales sheet states it stalls under pressure and can run dry, the two habits that make AODD pumps popular, without needing a compressed air supply.

What power does the QUANTM i230 need?

380–480 V three-phase, 16 A full-load, on a 20 A breaker, with a 5 kA short-circuit current rating. It is not offered for 120 V or 240 V single-phase supplies.

Can the QUANTM i230 go in a hazardous (classified) area?

No. The i230 is listed to UL 1004-1 and CSA C22.2 No. 100 for non-hazardous locations only. For a classified area, an air-operated pump with the right rating is still the answer.

What materials is the QUANTM i230 available in?

The fluid section is aluminum only, with a choice of seat, ball and diaphragm materials (Santoprene, Geolast, Buna-N, neoprene, FKM and PTFE options). Check every wetted material against the fluid before ordering; aluminum rules out many acids, caustics and halogenated solvents.

How loud is the QUANTM i230?

Graco publishes 81.5 dBA sound pressure at 1 m (103.2 dBA sound power) for the i230. There is no air exhaust, which removes the exhaust noise and icing an air pump can have, but plan hearing protection to the published figure.

Who can size a QUANTM pump for my application?

Send LibertyCES your fluid, flow, discharge pressure, suction conditions and power supply. James Riggins reviews the duty against Graco's curve and the materials chart and tells you whether the i230, a smaller QUANTM or an air pump is the right call.
