Rotomolded polyethylene chemical tanks (HDPE, XLPE) run from a few gallons to about 15,500 gallons in most single-wall lines, with one general vertical line reaching 20,000. For 17,000–30,000 gallons, extrusion-wound HDPE or polypropylene (vertical to 30,000; rectangular to 18,000) or a custom FRP tank is the route. Double-wall tanks top out around 10,500–12,500 gallons.

93–98% sulfuric acidCarbon steel passivates and is the standard bulk-tank material in this band. Vendor literature puts FRP’s limit near 80% and reports XLPE failing within 6 months at 98%.Sulfuric acid, any strengthPoly Processing requires secondary containment in all applications.Hydrofluoric acidXLPE in a tank-within-a-tank (SAFE-Tank); an IMFO outlet if double wall isn’t feasible.Hydrogen peroxide (≤50%)XLPE with a hinged-weighted manway that relieves at 0.25 psi during decomposition.Hydrofluosilicic acidXLPE with an IMFO outlet (or SAFE-Tank). Can you get an 18,000-gallon poly tank?
Yes. Among published lines, Houston PolyTank's extrusion-wound tanks (vertical to 30,000 gal, rectangular to 18,000 gal) and Peabody's general vertical storage line (to 20,000 gal) cover 18,000 gallons; most other polyethylene lines stop at 15,500 to 16,500 gallons. Custom FRP is the other route.
What does a tank's specific gravity rating mean?
It is the heaviest fluid the tank is designed to hold, relative to water at 1.0. Lines in the table publish ratings from 1.5 to 2.0, and the rating has to be at or above the specific gravity of the chemical at its storage concentration.
When do I need a double-wall chemical tank?
Some chemicals call for it: Poly Processing requires secondary containment for sulfuric acid in all applications and recommends its tank-within-a-tank SAFE-Tank for hydrofluoric acid. Published double-wall lines run up to about 10,500 to 12,500 gallons.
